And now other organizations are working hard in the carbon dioxide fight A new program in North Dakota is working towards decreasing the amount of carbon in the sky while increasing the number of ducks in the air State landowners in the Prairie Pothole Region can now enroll native prairie or expired CRP land in the U S Fish and Wildlife s Grassland Easement Program The program prohibits the grassland from being plowed ensuring that existing soil carbon remains sequestered and is prevented from reentering the atmosphere as CO2 Director of Conservation Programs with Ducks Umlimited Jim Ringelman says currenly the program is focusing on central North Dakota Jim Ringelman DU Right now there is a waiting list of 100 landowners who are interested in saving their prairie through easements And we are finding alot of interest in enrolling in the carbon agreement as well We hope in the end to be able to save about 30-thousand acres of prairie under this program Ringelman says climate change will have a significant impact on ducks plus ducks need large expanses of grassland for successful nesting A one-time payment will be provided to those landowners enrolling and passing on their carbon rights to Ducks Unlimited
